Obama’s Quiet War

It would seem to this political observer that President Obama is engaging in a war against the Catholic Church and other denominations that he ultimately cannot win. First, of course, I must disclose that I was born, baptized, confirmed and remain a Catholic. I have also been involved in politics ever since I traveled the state with my dad in 1948, organizing every Minnesota county for the re-election of U.S. Senator Joseph Ball (who lost to Hubert Humphrey that year).

President Obama attended and was married in a Bible-based church in Chicago.  Thus I presume he believes that the Bible is the word of God. I began to pay closer attention to his animus against the Bible-believing churches when he announced recently that he fully endorsed gay marriage.  Has he never read chapter 19 of Genesis, or other passages of the New Testament, which clearly tell us that sodomy (homosexual activity) is a serious sin?

It is most interesting that President Obama, who himself taught law, failed to recall the 1986 case of Bowers vs. Hardwick (478US186) where our Supreme Court upheld a Georgia statute outlawing consensual sodomy, observing that “until 1961 all 50 states outlawed sodomy.”  Chief Justice Burger wrote, “Condemnation of those practices is firmly rooted in Judeo-Christian moral and ethical standards.  To hold that sodomy is somehow protected as a fundament right is to cast aside millennia of moral teaching.”

Last year Obama’s Secretary of Health and Human Services issued regulations under Obamacare that compelled all employers having 50 or more employees to purchase health insurance which covered sterilization, which has been condemned by the Catholic Church for 2,000 years. Similarly, those regulations mandated the insurance coverage of “abortifacients,” drugs that kill the unborn child in the womb, as well as contraceptives, which have also been anathema in almost all Christian churches from the beginning.  But employers have no choice under Obama’s healthcare regulations.  No matter what their moral convictions are they must provide that Obamacare coverage by federal mandate or suffer severe financial penalties!

While the churches themselves are exempt from these Obamacare regulations, their hospitals, schools, colleges or charities are not. Of course all private employers, many of whom take the word of God seriously, are required to provide Obamacare insurance coverage notwithstanding their serious conscientious moral objections.

It would certainly appear that President Obama is conducting a war on the Catholic Church as well as on other Christian churches which hold these millennia-old Bible-based beliefs—that marriage between a man and a woman is sacred, established in the beginning by God, and, that the new child in a woman’s womb is indeed a new human baby, endowed by God with an immortal soul!

Obama approves killing that new child in the womb by abortion at the option of the mother—he has long held that position, as evidenced by his vote years ago in the Illinois legislature against the “born-alive act” designed to protect those babies born alive although aborted.  And yet Obama, following Sandy Hook, solemnly proclaimed on January 16, 2013 that “our first task as a society is keeping our children safe….This is how we will be judged.”  He was right, judgment is certainly coming, but he apparently doesn’t count children in the womb.

By his actions he has attempted to not only be our president, but our “theologian-in-chief.”  If the courts do not reverse his policies we can all take solace in the fact that we must endure them only for another three years.   Regardless, President Obama’s policies will not change the long-held moral teachings of my church and other Bible-believing churches. And they will be here long after Obama  is a mere footnote in the dust bin of history.
