Saving lives through donating blood
Piepho knows she wouldn’t be here without blood donations

Alice Piepho of Eagle Bend is quite certain she wouldn’t be here today if it were not for the blood transfusions she received last June.

In 1964 Piepho had Rheumatic Fever which later in her life caused her to have heart problems. She was on a blood thinner in June 2012.

“One of my sons was home and we were going to go over and visit my other son on the farm when I realized I was losing blood. I said, ‘I don’t think we better go to the farm. You better take me to the hospital,’” recalled Piepho.

They went to Lakewood Health System in Staples where she was given plasma among other things and then was taken to the St. Cloud hospital by ambulance when the bleeding did not stop.

“I was there from Saturday, June 23, until Wednesday, the 27th. The whole time I was there they were giving me blood transfusions. I think it was around 12,” she said.

She was able to come home and has been fine since and is no longer on a blood thinner.

Since that time, two of her sons have given blood, “to replace what mom used.”

“It is wonderful that it is there and that it is there right now for people when they need it,” said Piepho.

The annual Eagle Bend blood drive for the Red Cross will be held on March 25 and 26 and is being cosponsored by the Eagle Valley High School.

The school will be qualified for the Red Cross scholarship program which is based on the number of units of blood that are collected.

Donating blood saves lives. You can sign up for a time to donate blood online at: redcrossblood.org or call the event organizer David Rolstad at 218-738-5353.

The blood drive will be held at the Faith Lutheran Church on Highway 71 in Eagle Bend. The drive hours are from 1 to 7 p.m. on March 25 and from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on March 26. Make sure to bring a photo ID or your donor card when donating.
