City of Hewitt
Hewitt is a small, quiet, "Bedroom
Community". With its population of 268 (2000 Census),
it is located almost in the center of Minnesota. It is located
on U.S. Highway 71 about 165 miles northwest of Minneapolis in
the heart of Minnesota's dairy country. Most people work out
of the city in neighboring towns or communities.
A half hour's drive will take you to some of the best fishing
in the state, as well as camping, theatres and large shopping
centers.
The Hewitt and Bertha school districts consolidated, becoming
the Bertha-Hewitt Schools.
In 2000, the district completed a new gymnasium with much
more seating than before. Along with the gymnasium was also added
a new wing for HeadStart programing, services and classrooms.
The Hangout, Bertha-Hewitt's School Age Child Care Center, also
operates out of that new addition.
The businesses, although few, show pride in their community.
They offer a craft and variety store, a full-service gas station
and repair shop, a car dealership, a bar which provides big name
entertainment, a saloon and grill, as well as a restaurant and
post office. The award-winning newspaper, the Independent
News Herald provides news coverage for Hewitt and is the
city's official newspaper.
The fire department is one of the best trained departments
in the area.
In Hewitt, you can be as busy or as laid back as you wish to
be! There's a city park with new playground equipment, tennis
court, ball diamond, museum, and something always going on around
the corner.
The Senior Citizens Center provides activities at the center
include cards and games, crafts and quilting and trips to events
throughout the state.
The Lions, Lioness and other civic and community organizations
donate their time and talents to the community.
The youth of the area are not forgotten. 4-H clubs, church
youth groups and school-sponsored events are available to all
area youth. Each year the Lions, Lioness and other friends of
the community put together special holiday events for the youth.
The religious needs of the community are served by two Lutheran
churches, and the United Methodist. Catholic churches are located
in our neighboring towns.
Hewitt is a great place to visit, and better yet, to live.
Come and see for yourself!
