August 15, 2007 Obituary Notices for the Week of August 15, 2007 Bert Poppen Funeral Services were held for Bert F. Poppen, 66, of Long Prairie, on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at First Baptist Church in Long Prairie with Rev. Andrew Brown officiating. Poppen passed away Friday, August 10 at the St. Cloud Hospital from injuries received in a automobile accident. Bert Poppen was born at home on May 30, 1941 in Rhinerland Township (Chippewa County) to Ben and Fannie (Folkerts) Poppen. He was baptized at Bethany Reformed Church. He married Violet Schoep on September 15, 1961 at Hope Reformed Church in Montevideo. They farmed 11 miles northwest of Clara City for 22 years. They attended the Evangelical Free Church in Willmar where he served in many capacities including AWANA leader. In 1983 they moved to Parkers Prairie for 1 year and then moved to Long Prairie in 1984. He became a member of First Baptist Church in Long Prairie where he was active in Gideon ministries in churches and in jail ministries at the Todd County Jail. They opened Poppen's Monograms that they ran for 23 years. After he retired he started driving school bus. He was also a member of the Rose City Antique Threshing Club and W.M.S.T.R. at Rollag. He enjoyed mowing lawn, visiting with people and helping others. Bert was very generous to others. He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant twin sister. He is survived by his wife Violet of Long Prairie; children, Vickie (John) Rukavina of Eagan; Loren of Olivia; Berdell (Gretchen) of Duluth; Wayne (Tiffany) of Ramsey; sisters, Etta Brummer of Clara City; Jenny (John) Tebben of Clara City; Ida (Gerrit) Huisman of Sacred Heart; brother, George (Emily) of Clara City; and 12 grandchildren. Internment was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Long Prairie. Esther Johnson Funeral services were held for Esther Johnson, age 77, on Saturday, August 4 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Eagle Bend with Reverend Mary Carol Strug and Reverend Cordell Strug presiding. Esther passed away at the Lakewood Systems Hospital in Staples on Monday, July 30. Esther Ruth Johnson was born on April 20, 1930 to Lloyd and Ella (Jacobson) Johnson at Eagle Bend. Esther acquired polio in 1943 and it affected her health for the rest of her life. She graduated from Eagle Bend High School in May of 1953. Esther worked for a time as an assembler at the Sister Kenny Institute for the disabled in Minneapolis. Her health concerns forced her to move into the Care Center in Clarissa in 1983. Esther enjoyed crafts and helping with activities at the care center. She especially enjoyed music. In spite of her disabilities, she was always cheerful and had a good outlook on life. She enjoyed those she was surrounded by at the care center. Esther was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Rueben, Glen, Merle and infant Walter; and sisters Clara and Irma. She is survived by her brother Roy (Norma) of Belton, Missouri; sisters Margaret Bowers and Gladys Runge of Eagle Bend, Millie Larson of Coon Rapids, Jeanette Goff and Janice Peterson of Long Prairie; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Pallbearers were Dennis Goff, Johnnie Crider, Gary Crider, Gary Carlson, Craig Peterson and Duane Larson. Interment was at the Hope Cemetery in Eagle Bend. "What a beautiful day was given to us to say goodbye, farewell and 'we'll miss you' to our sister and friend and to someone who touched all our hearts in many ways. Blessed be her memory." - The family of Esther Ruth Johnson Evelyn Bain Services were held for Evelyn Bain, 86, of Clarissa, on Monday, August 13 at the United Methodist Church in Clarissa with Pastor Gary Taylor officiating. Evelyn passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2007. Evelyn was born on December 17, 1920 to Otto and Eva (Hughes) Reetz in New Lisbon, Wisconsin. She attended school in New Lisbon and after graduating, Evelyn enrolled in St. Olaf's University, earning her teaching degree in 1943. Evelyn's first job out of college was at the Clarissa Public School. She married Donald Bain on July 23, 1944 in Clarissa. Evelyn was the music teacher for Clarissa Public School for many years; she was the director for band and choir, taught music in the elementary school and was a vocal music judge. Even after retiring, Evelyn still taught music in the surrounding areas. She was the organist for the United Methodist Church for many years and was also a member of the Royal Neighbors and Study Club. Evelyn was selected as the Todd County Senior Citizen of the Year in 1999. Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald, son Barry and sister Adelyne Tate. She is survived by: her son Robert (Linda), grandchildren Scott Bain and Shanyn (Joel) Pautzke, great-grandchildren Carter Bain and Kelsey Pautzke, sister Marguerite Knox and sister-in-law Marge Bain. Casket bearers were Scott Bain, Joel Pautzke, Woody Knox, Jack Bain, Ken Pesta and Jon Hedlund. Internment was at Woodman Cemetery in Clarissa. Verne Larson Verne Larson, 83, of Staples died on August 5 at the Lakewood Health System in Staples. Committal services for Verne were held on Saturday, August 11, at Woodman Cemetery in Clarissa with Pastor Gary Taylor officiating. Verne was born on December 8, 1923 in Moran Township to Hilmer and Mary (Jagush) Larson. He attended school through the eigth grade and married Elaine Carlson on February 10, 1961. Verne farmed in Moran Township all his life. Verne is preceded in death by his parents, brother Harold Larson and sister Doris Meech. Verne is survived by his daughters Nancy (Craig) Strom of South Haven and Becky (Steve) Drayna of Browerville. Henry Moske Funeral services were held for Henry Moske, age 93 of Wadena, formerly of Deer Creek, on Saturday, August 11, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Henning with Pastor Randy Maland officiating. Henry died on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at Fair Oaks Lodge in Wadena. Henry Adolf Moske was born on April 5, 1914 at Parkers Prairie the son of Michael and Johanna (Schultz) Moske. He lived with his parents on a farm near Parkers Prairie. He was married to Loriena Viergutz in Parkers Prairie on August 12, 1936. They farmed near Bertha for a time and later moved to Inman Township near Deer Creek where they continued to farm. He is preceded in death by his daughters Phyllis and Patsy; a sister: Ella; and brothers, Emil, Fred, Walter, Paul and Otto. Henry is survived by his wife Loriena; two grandchildren, Robin and Brian; and four great grandchildren. Casketbearers were: Bob Coleman, Jeff Dahl, Scott Dahl, Jim Plehal, Lawrence Klemek and Brian Lange. Interment was in St. Paul's Cemetery at Henning. |
