New business in Hewitt

D & J Tack and Treasure transforms old grocery store
By Karin L. Nauber

Dale and Judy Denny opened their business in Hewitt on December 1.

A new business in Hewitt has done much to transform the look of the main street through town. Dale and Judy Denny have purchased the old Hewitt Co-op Grocery store building and have been busy siding it, putting in new windows and painting and adding carpet on the inside.
They have also been bringing in inventory to the shop which includes everything from horse tack and saddles to antiques and furniture to collectibles and primitives.
Dale also has some buggies, cutters (which are like sleighs) and pony wagons which are not at the store.
Dale and Judy are both interested in horses and are involved with the tack portion of the shop. The treasure part is Judy's.
Judy has had shops like the one in Hewitt for many years. Her first was in Abilene, Texas. She also had a shop in Moorhead.
The building has been resided and windows have been added to transform the old grocery store.
The Dennys had wanted to purchase the store and run a grocery store, but when that didn't work out they decided to open the tack and treasure shop.
"Dale likes to fix things up so this was a good project for him," said Judy of their purchase.
Dale and Judy have known each other for many years and always had horses as a common interest.
"Horse people find other horse people. It doesn't take long and they find others," said Judy.
Dale has been thinning out his herd recently so some of the tack for sale is from his own equipment. Some is brand new. Dale started out the summer with 120 horses and ponies and now has 15.
The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and in the afternoon on Sunday. They will be keeping these hours through Christmas.
