Dorothy Alcox
Services were held in private for Mrs. Dorothy Elvera Alcox, 84, of Frederick, Maryland, who passed away on Sunday, August 26.
Dorothy was born on May 6, 1923 in Bertha. She was the oldest daughter of the late Elvera and Leonard Bluhm.
As the wife of a Public Health Service dentist, she made a home for her family in several states across the United States. Dorothy generously volunteered her time to many church and community organizations. She also enjoyed gardening, traveling, golf, sewing and her home on the lake in Northern Minnesota. Her strength and spirit were always an inspiration to her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ray Warren Alcox, to whom she was married for 48 years.
She is survived by three daughters; Kathy Olsen of Walkersville, MD; Susan Deschenes of Colchester, CT; and Patricia Friedrich of Middletown, MD; six grandchildren, Eric and David Olsen, Meghan Roche, Kate, Matthew and Christopher McCall; her brother, Donald Bluhm of Alexandria and her sister Phyllis Macholtz of Montrose, CO.

Stanley Hof
Funeral services were held for Stanley Earl Hof, 84, of Battle Lake, on Tuesday, August 21 with the Reverend Orville Sauter officiating. Stanley passed away on Saturday, August 18 at the Good Samaritan Center in Battle Lake.
Stanley was born on April 7, 1923 in Bertha, to Clinton and Florence Hof.
After graduating from high school, he left for California to work at a Boeing Aircraft Factory. He enlisted in the Army Air Force on December 15, 1942. He was trained as an Aerial belly gunner and flew 69 missions in the Phillipines, Western Pacific Theater of Operations and Borneo.
On November 30, 1944, on leave for Thanksgiving, Stanley was united in marriage with Peg Egan at his parents' home.
He was honorably discharged on November 15, 1945 and returned to Wadena. He worked for Natural Gas Company filling tanks and he worked his way up into management. Jobs within the company allowed Stan to live and work in Alexandria, New Hampton, Iowa and Maquoketa, Iowa. He retired to the Battle Lake area.
Stan enjoyed the outdoors. He hunted deer and moose and fished walleye and Canadian lake trout. He was very interested in the stock market and enjoyed monitoring his investments. He also spent time in his vegetable garden and nurturing his grove of black walnut trees.
Stanley was preceded in death by his parents ,Clinton and Florence; son, Stanley Jr. in 1977; and brother, John.
He is survived by his wife, Peg of Battle Lake; daughter Karen (John) Heffernan of Grimes, Iowa; grandchildren, Amy, Heidi, Michael and Kim; great-grandhcildren, Emma, Taylor and Madeline; brother, Clinton of Desmet, South Dakota; and sisters, Betty of Bertha and Joann of Las Vegas, Nevada.
