Once in a Blue Moon
by Ray Benning

As a parent of Eagle Valley students, a business owner in the community and a resident of the district I feel I must comment on the fact that the school district is discussing spending approximately $100,000 on a new roof at the high school or $70,000 on the heating system at the elementary.
The problem I have with this is that we do not even know where these buildings stand in the long term of our district. So why just throw the money away at this point when we don't know what the future holds. When you read the school board meeting watch in this issue, you will see that Superintendent Stephen Twitchell did question this. To me it is a no brainerjust do what you need to do to get by until a final decision is made on the building situation.
Speaking of these buildings, all of the residents of this district need to start talking publicly about what you think is right for the future of Eagle Valley. This needs to be a fiscally smart and responsibly thought-out decision.
I have been thinking about this for a while now and feel that our Superintendent and Principal Deanna Mattson-Millar need to start talking as well. They were hired to lead our district, yet I still have not heard where they stand or would like to see the district go. I know they must have an opinion in what they think is best for Eagle Valley. As a leader it is tough, but at times you need to stick your neck out and speak for what you believe in. (A quote Mr. Twitchell has recited, "The turtle only makes progress by sticking its neck out".) They are working in this district and have worked in other districts prior to coming to Eagle Valley, this experience should help make an informed recommendation. Whether they are here for one year or ten years, people look to them for guidance.
I will comment in the next few weeks about things I have heard, both pros and cons, for each existing building or a new one.
Those of you who choose not to speak out and be heard should be the last ones to complain when a final decision is made. This is a community decision. I challenge you to give your two cents worth.
I invite you to submit letters to the editor or comment on our new comment or blog pages on our website at www.inhnews.com. (They should be up and running by the end of the week.)
It's your time to speak out.
