January 16, 2008 Browerville girls play well, but lose two by Coach Mark Perkins
The Browerville Girls Basketball Team played two games this past week. On Tuesday night the Rockets from Underwood came to town for a non-conference game. On Thursday, the Tigers traveled to Upsala for a Prairie Conference and Section 5A game against the Cardinals. Browerville 24-Underwood 37 If you were looking for an offensive shootout, this was not the game for you. The shooting by both teams was so poor that with less than 5 minutes to go in the first half, the score was knotted at 4. Underwood made a couple of quick baskets to get to 10 points. The Tigers responded with 4 points of their own. At the half Underwood led 14-8. Each team was a little better in the second half with Underwood scoring 23 points in the half and the Tigers getting 16 points. Still, neither team lit it up. We were happy with our defensive effort. Underwood is very tall. Most of the time we held them to one shot. We just weren't able to execute or make any shots on the offensive end. Browerville 52-Upsala 56 The Cardinals from Upsala pulled out a close victory Thursday night against the visiting Tigers. The Tigers had a number of chances in this game. The first 12 minutes was some of the better basketball the Tigers have played all year. Crisp passing, unselfish play, and good tough defense led to a 13-point lead. Aided by a couple of untimely Tiger fouls, the Cardinals made a nice comeback to get within 6 by halftime. Still, we were pretty happy with the way in which we were playing. The Cardinal pressure started to get to the Tigers in the second half. When Upsala gets going, they are a very good team. Slowly the Tiger lead evaporated. With 5 minutes left we found ourselves down 3. The Tigers responded with 7 straight points only to see the Cardinals come back to take a one point lead with under 2 minutes to go. The Tigers had numerous chances to take the lead, but turnovers got the best of them. We need to find people that want the ball when the game is tight. We couldn't find those people in the final minutes of this game. |
