Bears boys win holiday tournament
by Coach Dale Finck

The B-H Bears Basketball Team hit the road for three games before the winter break. While on the road we won the Holiday tournament and improved our record to 6-0.
On Tuesday, December 18, the Bears traveled to Parkers Prairie. The Panthers were ready attack and caught the Bears on their heels at the beginning of the game. Denny and Hartung scored 22 of the Bears first 25 points to keep the Bears with a lead 25-22 with 3:23 left. "We struggled all through the game to contain their point guard and never settled in offensively." Stated Coach Finck "We were lucky to go into half with a 32 25 lead."
In the second half, the Bears attempted to show more patience and work the ball inside where the Panthers couldn't match-up. The Panthers did a nice job in the zone, keeping the ball out of the inside, but the Bears were able to settle in and started to stretch the lead. Hartung and Denny continued to lead the Bears in the second half finishing the game with 24 and 27 points respectfully. Defensively we struggled to play solid Bears defense like we are used to seeing out of this squad, which kept the Panthers in the game. A prime example was that we sent the Panthers to the foul line 33 times. Despite the struggles for the Bears, they finished the game on top 74 59.
On Thursday, December 20, the Bears faced the Henning Hornets in the Holiday Tournament. The Bears were eager to get after the Hornets because they were looking to become the Holiday Champions, for the last year of the tournaments existence. We did just that by starting the game with 10 quick points and a 10-0 lead. After a timeout by the Hornets they were able to settle in and the Bears slowed down drastically. We didn't show much patience offensively and found ourselves struggling a bit. The Bears were unable to stretch the lead much after the 10-0 run, at halftime the score was Bears 26 Hornets 14.
In the second half, the Bears again jumped out early with a 14 0 run. Riewer ignited the Bears offense with the first 11 points of the half. We really started to roll offensively and had a balanced scoring attack. Nine of the 13 players scored in the half and made some good passes for easy baskets. The Hornets struggled with our athleticism and we made it look easy in the second half. The final score was Bears 67Hornets 34.
In championship game, the Bears would face big Leif Nomeland and the Osakis Silverstreaks. We knew going in, that Osakis will go to Nomeland and we really focused our efforts into stopping him on the inside, yet trying to keep their shooters from getting open shots. The Bears did just that as it took them 3+ minutes to get their first basket and we held them to only 14 points in the half. It was a great individual and team effort by the Bears. Ashbaugh did an outstanding job on Nomeland who is one of the best posts. Defending a 6'8" post that can score isn't easy and Ashbaugh proved it again and again he can do the job. Offensively the Bears exploded again to a 10- 0 run, except we would never look back this night. Denny ripped the Silverstreaks for 22 points in the half and helped the team to a 43 14 halftime lead. Denny was feeling it and we did an excellent job as a team making sure that he got the first look in our offense.
In the second half, the Bears continued to control the game with a solid defense. The Silverstreaks scored 6 points in the first 9 minutes while the Bears tossed in 22 points and had a 65 22 lead. Despite the Silverstreaks box in 1 the Bears worked the ball around for good shots and really stretched the lead. "We put together a very solid game on both ends of the court. Our execution on both ends of the court was good. It was a lot of fun watching the guys having such a solid game before the winter break," remarked Coach Finck about the 75-39 win over the Silverstreaks. The Bears win gave them the Holiday Tournament Championship along with individual medals. Ryan Denny, John Hartung, and Marcus Riewer represented the Bears as part of the All Tournament Team.
