January 2, 2008 Lady Bears host holiday tournament by Coach Kristy Finck
The Lady Bears Basketball team hosted the 2007 GBB Holiday Tournament. The four teams playing in the tournament were Bertha-Hewitt, Osakis, Brandon-Evansville and Henning. On the first night, the early game had B-H matched up to play Osakis and in the late game B-E and Henning would face off. After the first night of play, B-H fell to Osakis by a score of 54-57 and B-E took it to Henning as they defeated them by a score of 73-41. On Friday night, the Lady Bears defeated the Hornets by a score of 75-43 and the B-E Chargers won the Holiday tournament as they pulled off a close game against the Osakis Silverstreaks by a score of 69-59. In the game against the Osakis Silverstreaks, the Bears played an overall good game, but they were unable to pull off the win in the end. The Bears led for most of the game and then there was a huge momentum change in the game as the Silverstreaks started playing very aggressive defense. During this four minute tempo change there were no fouls called and the Lady Bears struggled handling the ball. After the Bears calmed down and started playing more aggressive, they saw themselves back in the game. With 8 seconds left in the game and no time outs left, the Bears were able to get off a good shot and then pull down the offensive rebound and get one final shot at the basket. No fouls were called and the game ended with a final score of B-H 54, Osakis 57. Leading all scores was Jessica Finck, with her career high 25 points. Morgan Kapphahn also had her career high as she poured in 15 points for the night. Also scoring for the Bears were Kendra Stokes with 7, Corrina Tindal had 3 and Sarah VanDenheuvel and Arei Stokes each added 2. Kendra Stokes led the team in rebounds with 9, Finck led the team in assists with 4 and Kapphahn led the team in steals with 4. Against Henning the Bears knew that they had to play very well to pull off a win as they had only beat Henning by 1 point in overtime a week earlier. The Bears came out ready to play as their defense set the tempo for the game. In the first half, Jessica Finck and Kendra Stokes combined for 25 of their teams 31 points. In the second half, Morgan Kapphahn got a hot shooting hand as she hit three in a row from behind the arch. "Everyone on the team contributed to this win over the Hornets. It was a great way to end our 2007 season before our winter break," stated Coach Finck. The Bears had three individuals score double digits; Kendra Stokes had 21, Jessica Finck had 20 and Morgan Kapphahn with 14. Also scoring for the Bears were; Emily Mikkelson, Sarah VanDenheuvel, Brittany Kimber, Arei Stokes, and Lydia Alexander each scoring 4 apiece. Kendra Stokes led the team in rebounds with 8, Finck led in assists with 8 and Arei Stokes and Finck led the team in steals with 4 apiece. Jessica Finck and Kendra Stokes were both chosen to the Holiday All-Tournament team. The Bears overall record is 3-4. Their first game back after their holiday break is on Thursday, January 3 against the Menahga Braves. Game time is scheduled for 6:15. At this time there is no C-squad game scheduled. |
