January 9, 2008 Lady Bears open up 2008 with a loss by Coach Kristi Finck
The Lady Bears basketball team opened up their 2008 season of basketball with a loss to the Menahga Braves. The Bears knew that they had to contain the Braves from shooting from behind the 3 point line as they are averaging about 15 per game. For the first 8 minutes of play the Bears played rather well as they took an early 16-4 lead, but then they started to get into some foul trouble and the Braves were able to score 11 of their 23 first half points from the free throw line. At halftime the Bears had a slight lead over the Braves 33-29. The second half was much the same as the Bears were continually being called for fouls. The Bears had three players foul out of the game and two players who had 4 fouls. This is definitely what lost the game for us. We beat the Braves in every area of the game except from the free throw line. The Bears were 12 for 16 from the line and the Braves were a whopping 32 for 44 from the line. The final score was B-H 72, Menahga 78. This was a very disappointing loss for the Bears. It was a game that we should have won. The loss now puts the Bears at 1-3 in the Park Region Conference and 3-5 overall. Jessica Finck led the Bears with 18 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds. Kendra Stokes had her first career double-double as she scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebound. She also led the team in steals with 4. Morgan Kapphahn was another Bear to score double digits as she put in 10 points for the night. She also contributed to the team with 5 assists and 3 steals. Also scoring for the Bears were: Corrina Tindal, Sarah VanDenheuvel, and Brittany Kimber with 6 points each, and Emily Mikkelson and Arei Stokes each having 5 points. The Bears have a very busy schedule for the month of January. On Tuesday, they will travel to Evansville to take on a very solid Brandon-Evansville team and then on Thursday they will host the Staples-Motley Cardinals. |
