January 9, 2008 Obituary Notices for the Week of January 9, 2008 Albert Marthaler Funeral mass was held on Saturday, January 5, 2008 for Albert Christian Marthaler, age 89, of Wadena, formerly of Hewitt, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Wadena, with Father Donald Wagner and Father Andrew Marthaler as celebrants. Albert passed away at Lakewood Health Systems on January 2 in Staples. Albert was born to Albert J. and Antoinette (Deters) on September 22, 1918 in West Union. He served in the United States Air Force from February 1942 to September 1945. Albert was united in marriage to Bernice Bueckers, June 4, 1947 in Freeport. They raised their family and farmed by Osakis until moving to Hewitt in 1955. He managed the Hewitt Elevator until 1960 and was then employed at Wadena Builders Supply until 1980. After his retirement he worked with Green Thumb and was a volunteer for delivering meals. Albert enjoyed spending time with his kids, grandkids, family and friends sharing stories of his past, playing games, cards, word-find, sports and traveling. Albert was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant daughter; brothers Paul, Anthony, and Lawrence; sister Annella Hougnon; and infant granddaughter Stacy Thiel. He is survived by his wife, Bernice; sons Terry (Karen) of Perham, Stan (Lynn) of Big Fork, and Jeff (Maria) of Wadena; daughter Susan (Dennis) Thiel of Staples; grandchildren, Tracy (Jeff) Kent, Taryn (Ryan) Krumwiede, Shanna and Alisha Marthaler, Travis (fiancée, Jessica Arendt) Thiel, Andrew and Tyler Marthaler, Travis (Amanda) Davis; great-grandchildren, Hailie and Elliott Kent, and Eva and Olivia Davis; brother, Father Andrew Marthaler of Elbow Lake; sisters, Sister Andre Marthaler of St. Joseph, Sister Germana Marthaler of Crookston, Mother Mary Peter of Sauk Rapids, Joan (Chuck) Pfannenstein of St. Louis Park and Imelda (Jack) McCann of Clear Lake. Honorary pallbearers were Tracy Kent, Taryn Krumwiede, Shanna and Alisha Marthaler. Active pallbearers were: Travis Thiel, Andrew and Tyler Marthaler, Ryan Krumwiede, Jeff Kent and Travis Davis. Interment was at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Bertha. Gordon L. Baker Funeral services for Gordon L. Baker, age 85, of Columbia Heights, were held on Thursday at Washburn-McReavy Columbia Heights Chapel. Gordon was retired from the Minneapolis School Board, and was a lifetime member of Columbia Heights VFW Post #230. He was preceded in death by parents, Arthur and Selma Baker and sister, Doris Beckman. He is survived by wife, Ardis; daughter, Juliann Baker; grandson, Andrew Morales and great-grandson, Jacob; sister, Donna Schnettler (Jerome), Clarissa; also many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Interment was at the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Doris Wagner Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 5, 2008, for Doris A. (Mettler) Wagner, age 81, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Verndale. Doris entered into eternal life on December 27, 2007 at her home in Texas City, Texas. Doris was born October 18, 1926 to Amos and Bertha (Haugen) Grandin at Straubille, ND, in Sargent County. She attended grades one through eight at Harlem #2 and graduated from Cogswell High School in 1946. After graduation, she moved to Mankato. She married Harold Mettler on May 11, 1950, and resided in Mankato until 1963 when she moved with her family to Bertha. She worked as a seamstress for many years in Staples, retiring in 1996. After the death of her husband in 1992, she married Richard Wagner on June 17, 1995 and resided in Verndale until August 2007 when she moved to Texas City, Texas. She enjoyed baking, crocheting, dancing, fishing and sewing. Preceding Doris in death were her parents; first husband, Harold; two sisters; and three brothers. Grateful for sharing in her life and those who will miss her greatly are her husband, Richard; son Thomas (Brigitte) of Bertha; daughters, Audrey (Terry) of Texas City, Texas; Paulette of Shakopee, and Sandra (Duane) of St. Peter; 25 beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Patricia (Jack) Connelly of Madison Lake; brother, Allen (Jerry) Grandin of Phelps, NY.; sisters-in-law, Marcella Cole of North Mankato, Lorraine Gaare of Tuscon, Arizona, and Phyllis Gaare of Staples; and many nieces and nephews. Burial was at St. Frederick's Catholic Cemetery in Verndale. Rosina Kraetzner Funeral services for Rosina Kraetzner of Bertha will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2008 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bertha with Reverend Blake Rickbeil presiding. Rosina passed away on Saturday, January 5, at the Central Todd County Care Center in Clarissa at the age of 93 years. Rosina Kraetzner was born on February 24, 1914 to Paul and Hertha (Sellin) Steinberg at their home in Bertha. She was united in marriage with Arthur F. Kraetzner on October 27, 1934 at the St. John's Lutheran Church at Atwater. They lived for a time in the St. Paul Area, Pine County area and New London area before returning to Bertha. Rosina was a homemaker who, when not helping with the farm work and raising her daughters, enjoyed sewing, gardening and her pets. Rosina was preceded in death by her husband Arthur on December 26, 1986; her parents Paul and Hertha Steinberg; sisters Lucia Newgard and Idella Strande; and grandson Bradley Stange. She is survived by her daughters Celia (Gerald) Evenson of New London and Annette (Donald) Stange of Hewitt; 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are Michael Fugleberg, Darrel Stange, Timothy Beard and Harold Schlueter. Interment will be in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Bertha. |
