Be a Loser With Me: Part 10

The "social" eater
by Karin L. Nauber

I like to eat.
Letís face it, most of us do.
It is an ingrained part of our socialization. We gather together to eat for many occasions. We go out for dinner on a date, we eat at celebrations and at times of loss. As humans, we can find almost any reason, or no reason at all to eat.
What gets us in trouble is when the occasional bout of over-eating turns into a pattern of over-eating. When the occasional eating of the ěwrongî things turns into a habit, that is when the trouble develops.
Those things, coupled with the lack of activity that our society is notorious for, lead us into being overweight and obese.
We sometimes begin to see food or social gatherings as the enemy.
Neither one is the enemy.
The last time I was on a ědiet,î I gained seven pounds. I did everything according to the diet that I was supposed to do. I ate the correct portions and I recorded everything I ate. I put a lot of time and effort into it and I was starving. After two weeks and only a weight gain, I was so discouraged I vowed I would not go on another diet of any kind. I felt that I was destined to stay obese and there was just nothing I could do about it. Every bit of food I saw somehow made its way onto my hips whether I ate it or not. I was on the ěsee foodî diet for sure. I saw food and it became a part of me.
Then I did some reading. I did some research and the biggest thing I did for myself was that I quit smoking. I also saw a chance to do something to better my health in other ways and so began this contest.
I have now lost five pounds total in one month. That may not seem like much to most people, but I feel great about it. I certainly canít tell that I have lost anything yet. My pants arenít fitting looser or anything like that, but in my mind, that five pounds is the first foothill in the mountain and I climbed it.
Here is a simple equation for figuring out your total percentage of weight lost.
Take your weight now and put two zeros behind it. For example, my weight now is 271 so my number would be 27100. Divide that number by your original weight. My original weight was 276 so I will divide 27100 by 276 which equals 98.1884. Then you take this number and subtract it from 100. So 100 minus 98.1884 equals 1.8116. This is the percentage of total body weight I have lost.
I hope you all did something good for yourselves this past week.
