Jean Fischer
Funeral services were held on January 13, 2010 for Jean A. Fischer, 80, of Bertha, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bartlett Township with Reverend Al Jeske officiating. Jean passed away on January 8 at Fair Oaks Lodge in Wadena.
Jean was born on August 9, 1929 to William and Ida (Riebe) Umland in Bartlett Township, rural Bertha.
Jean was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bartlett Township on September 1, 1929 and later confirmed there on May 9, 1943. She attended Verndale High School, graduating with the class of 1948. It was in the same church that Jean wed Robert N. Fischer on May 20, 1955. She assisted him with the farming and was a dedicated homemaker.
She belonged to the Ladies’Äô Aide at Bartlett and the Senior Center in Verndale. Her days were busy with sewing, gardening, lawn care, flowers, crocheting, embroidery and playing board games with her family.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, on March 3, 2002; her parents, William and Ida; her twin brother, Eugene; and an infant brother. She is survived by her daughters Annette (William) Fritz of Brooklyn Park, and Renee (Myron) Rieker of Herreid, South Dakota; and her grandson Collin.
Pallbearers were Darrell Fischer, Wayne Braith, Clarence Horsager, Chuck Neal, Jim Thompson, and LeRoy Bramer.
Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery in Verndale.
Lucille Hanson
Funeral services were held at on January 15, 2010 for Lucille E. Hanson, 81, of Wadena, in the Wadena Evangelical Church in Wadena, with Reverend Jeff Heisler officiating. She went to be with the Lord on January 12 at Tri-County Hospital in Wadena.
Lucille was born on July 19, 1928, in Wadena.
Lucille grew up farming in Leaf River Township, just outside of Wadena. She graduated from Wadena High School in 1946 and Park Rapids Teachers Training in 1947. She continued her education while teaching and graduated from Bemidji State College in 1959.
Her teaching career began in 1947’Äì1949 at District #51 (northeast of Sebeka), 1949-1951 District #44 (Thomas Town), 1951-1955 District #219 (Hay Creek), 1955-1963 Eagle Bend. In 1963, she moved to Minneapolis and continued teaching in the Minneapolis Public Schools from 1963- 1964 Audubon Elementary, 1964- 1974 Lake Harriet Elementary, 1974-1982 Burroughs Elementary. She taught for 35 years and retired from teaching in 1982.
Upon retirement she moved back to Wadena. She spent time helping on the farm, caring for her parents and gardening. She was an active community member and a member of the Wadena Evangelical Church. She supported several local programs as well as Camp Jim located near Brainerd. She was a five year resident of Fair Oaks Lodge.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Esther Hanson, and grand nephew, Paul Joseph Ellsworth.
She is survived by a sister, Linda (Paul) Rohe; nieces Melody (Scott) Lommen, Robin Rohe-Ellsworth, Joy (Mike) Smith; and 10 grandnieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Mark Ellsworth, Kaleb Lommen, Kory Lommen, Kaycee Lommen, Sabrina Smith and Alysha Smith. Interment was in the Sebeka West Cemetery in rural Sebeka.
Richard Shaw
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, January 15, 2010 at St. Stephen Catholic Church, St. Stephen for Richard ’ÄúRich’Äù M. Shaw, age 44, of Sartell. Rev. Robert Harren officiated. Richard passed away on Sunday, January 10.
Rich was born on February 23, 1965 in Wadena to Douglas and Sharon (Edwards) Shaw.
He married Lisa Schmidt on July 31, 1987 at Munsinger Gardens in St. Cloud.
He lived in Illinois for 9 years, Bertha for 9 years and in the Sartell/St. Stephen area since 1987.
Rich was currently employed at Verso Paper Co. in Sartell. He was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church. Rich enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, wrestling with his boys, and volunteering for field trips.
Rich was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa of Sartell; sons, Jake Kephart of Crivitz, Wisconsin, Logan, Lucas, and Riley Shaw all at home; granddaughter, Alyssa; mother, Sharon (Harvey) Arends of Spicer; father, Douglas (Sherri) Shaw of Bertha; brother and sisters, Duane Shaw of Wadena, Monica Johnson of Bertha, Roxanne Fiebiger of Hillsboro, North Dakota, and Rose Shaw of Bertha; step-siblings, Jenny Kirscht of Staples, James Schraufnagel of Wisconsin, Jessica Kole of Bertha, Tiffany Collins of Kerkoven, Tanya Arends of Longmont, Colorado, and Tammy Schoep of Plymouth.
Burial was in the St. Stephen Catholic Church parish cemetery.
Harold Kalk
Funeral services for Harold Ludwig Kalk, 92, of Belle Plaine and formerly of Morgan, were held on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church in Morgan with Reverend Dave Horton officiating. Harold passed away on January 14 at the Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine, with his wife of 69 years at his side.
Harold Kalk, the son of Ernst and Alma (Raddatz) Kalk, was born July 7, 1917 in Redwood Falls. He was baptized on July 12, 1917 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls by Pastor A. Schaller. On May 17, 1931, he was confirmed at St. John’Äôs by Pastor W.C. Nickels. Harold attended school in rural Redwood Falls.
On March 7, 1940, Harold married Ruth Hansen at Bethany Lutheran Church in rural Morgan. To this union five children were born ’Äì David, Phyllis, Janice, Ernest and Jolene. They farmed together in rural Morgan for 40 years, retiring in 1980. Harold continued to do farm work well into his 80s as well as doing lawn mowing at the Gilfillan Estate.
He enjoyed horses, old time music, yard work, driving around and looking at crops and, in his younger years, bowling. Harold enjoyed family get-togethers and had a nickname for each grandchild. He was an honest, hardworking man who would help wherever he could. Harold served on the church board of Zion Lutheran for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Gilbert, Norman, and Marvin; sister Irene; son-in-law David Meierding; and grandson Daniel Balko.
Harold is survived by his wife, Ruth, who lives at the Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine; son David (Julie) of Medford, Phyllis (Tom) Balko of Redwood Falls, Janice (Jerry) Thorson of Eagle Bend, Ernest (Lynnda) of New Ulm, and Jolene Meierding of Eagle Bend; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister Evelyn Hammerschmidt of Wabasso; and sisters-in-law Elda Kalk, Edna Kalk and Violet Hansen all of Morgan, and Selma Maxwell of Fairfax.
He will be greatly missed. Blessed be his memory.
Burial was in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, rural Morgan.
