What started as a birthday present for her mother has turned into a service for the community...

With the current virus situation, sixth grade Bertha-Hewitt student Brooklyn Hess, 11, of Eagle Bend wanted to help protect her mother, Jennifer Hess Bryniarski, who is the director of the Bertha Community Food Shelf located at the New Life Church of God in Bertha. Brooklyn took on the task and sewed her a fabric facemask.

“We had food shelf, the Monday before I made one, and I wanted to make one for my mom so we could wear it to keep us and others safe,” said Brooklyn.

“For food shelf distribution day we wanted to have some protection, not only for us, but for others keeping with what the governor is saying,” added Jennifer.

Brooklyn was taught to sew by her grandmother and has been sewing since she was nine. . . . .
