Overcoming life's obstacles, Mikaelsen attains his dream

    Ben Mikaelsen has come a long way from his childhood as a little boy who grew up in South America.

    He was the only white boy there and was incessantly teased for the fact, even trying to darken his skin with shoe polish.

    “I couldn’t stop the teasing. They called me the dumbie. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t change the color of my skin,” said the esteemed author.

    While admitting to being the dumbest kid in his whole school with his inability to read and write, he said he couldn’t sleep  because he had so many ideas in his head that kept him up at night.
