Down Home Foods looking for members: Membership drive to be held October 13

    Down Home Foods in Wadena is looking to expand their services in a new location, but in order to do so they need your help. 

    The co-op began in the basement of Jefferson Square. They purchased the Cheese Shoppe from Chuck Sartell in 1979 and moved in, sharing the space with the DMV.

    In November of 2016, Region Five started the Food Co-op Coalition to help build and expand the local food economy by developing a network of availability, accessibility and affordability of locally sourced foods. 

    “It’s providing support to food deserts­—rural areas that don’t have a lot of access to good food or choices,” shared Board Member Alex Weego.

    Region Five Development Commission’s Executive Director Cheryal Hills secured grants to build the coalition that  includes six food co-ops that include Down Home Foods, Crow Wing Food Co-op in Brainerd Everybody’s Market in Long Prairie, Ideal Green Market in Pequot Lakes, Minnesota Street Market in St. Joseph and The Purple Carrot in Little Falls that will open in 2019. Combined, these co-ops have over 2500 members and many frequent shoppers.
