Cooking for heroes

The smokers wafted the scent of barbecue throughout the community of Eagle Bend on April 27 as Hometown Heroes Outdoors teamed up with local barbecue competitors to teach veterans and law enforcement from across the state how to grill “competition” barbecue.
The Hometown Heroes Outdoors (HHO) organization based out of Farmington began in 2017. Since then they have added 5000 members and have expanded to North Dakota, Wisconsin and Iowa.
The organization takes law enforcement and veterans outside with hunting and fishing activities. While looking for new ideas, Steve Weishair of Eagle Bend suggested the idea of a barbecue cooking class.
“I saw on Facebook down in Georgia that competition barbecue teams were doing something for the wounded warriors,” explained Weishair.
He reached out to Veteran Alan Larrimore, who is part of the field staff with the HHO organization, and the plan took off from there. . . .
