Before Ty Lancaster—the son of Andy and Heather Lancaster of Clarissa—joined the Business Professionals of America group at Browerville High School his junior year, he didn’t know much about computer networking.

“But I learned a lot along the way,” said Ty.

He learned enough, in fact, to earn a third place finish in the Computer Network Technology event at the state competition in March. He took third out of 17 other competitors across the state.

The third place finish granted him the opportunity to go to the BPA national event held in Grapevine, Texas on May 9-13. Grapevine is just outside of Dallas.

At the national event, Ty placed 27th out of 64 other students from across the nation.

Ty said for the national event he had to attend one meeting then had to take a test on his skills. The test took about an hour.

Computer Network Technology is composed of several things, according to Ty, including working with binary addresses and setting up networks.

Ty said that this was a great experience for him.

“I was able to go and do things I have never done before. I’ve never been further away than Iowa. I’ve never flown before,” he said.

“The Texas culture is way different, too,” he added.

They got a “taste” of the Texas culture when they stopped to see Rick and Jane Voge—former owners/operators of the Clarissa Drug Store for many years. The Voges moved to Texas after retiring.

“While we were there, they fed us a traditional Texas food—bacon-wrapped pork loins with stuffed peppers in them,” he said.

His involvement with the local BPA chapter also included Fundamental Word Processing and Computer Hardware.

“I didn’t care for the word processing, so I will probably trade that one out for something else more in-depth [my senior year],” he said. “I will definitely be involved with BPA this year, too.”

Ty said he is working on figuring out his career goals and that his teacher, Jeff Marxer, has encouraged him to look further into networking because of his aptitude for the subject.

“I also have an aunt who does medical hardware development. I am looking into that, too,” he said.

For right now, Ty is working with his dad all summer on his construction business and thinking about his future in computers.
