One small step for man, one giant leap for Pickle Fest

SEND US A MESSAGE

On Saturday, July 20, during the Hewitt Pickle Fest celebration, they honored the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission of the moon landing with a replica of Apollo Lunar Module Eagle. Neil Armstrong (portrayed by Joseph Opelia) reenacted the first step on the moon. Audio recordings were played as they counted down to the landing at 3:17 p.m. and continued during the reenacted moon walk. After "Armstrong" placed the American flag, the crowd rose to salute the flag and sang the National Anthem. Attendees had the chance to pose for photos with the famous astronaut. Mayor Jim Opelia spent 80 hours and $300 to build the replica on a hayrack. The space suit was a painter's cover suit and the moon was an old pool. It all came together to recreate a historic moment.
