Pirates are Statebound

by Mike Mahlen

The Verndale Pirates sailed to a victory on the strength of their defense and a balanced offensive attack when they played at the Fargodome last week versus Brandon-Evansville. Their win secured them a trip to this year's state tournament.

The Pirates scored in the first quarter on a 22 yard pass to Luke Weniger from Mack Jones. In the second quarter, Jones scored on a 4 yard run to give Verndale a 14-0 halftime lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, Verndale scored twice in the fourth quarter—Mack Jones on a 5 yard run and on a 34 yard pass  to Craig Orlando from Jones.

Brandon-Evansville scored two late fourth quarter touchdowns to make the final score 26-16.
