Area snowmobile trails aren't ready for use yet

One of the trail grooming machines as seen last season. The grooming machines will, with hope, be hitting the trails soon. Bernie Mumm said he thinks it may be a slow start to getting the trails open because of the wet conditions.

According to Bernie Mumm of the Todd Area Trail Association, the area snowmobile trails are not ready for use yet.

“The trails around the state are all pretty much the same, although some in Northern Minnesota might be better,” said Mumm.

The problem is, the wet fall conditions have left a lot of the ground still unfrozen and there are some wet areas in the swamps that are causing difficulties.

They also were not able to get into some areas this fall because of the wet conditions to pack down tall grass among other things.

You can check the conditions of a state trail on the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website at: https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/snow_depth/index.html. This map from the DNR site shows the snow depths and is currently updated on a weekly basis.

According to Mumm, “The trails in Todd County are not open yet due to wet conditions in the swamps and trails.”

You can contact Mumm at 218-894-1835 to check on the status of the Todd County area trails.

While the trails throughout the county are mostly cleaned up, there are still some wet areas that they are working on.

They bought a new Argo machine that is being used to get into the wetter areas to pack down the grass.

There are 389 4/10th miles of groomed trails in Todd County.

The association is asking that riders please respect the trails and landowners and wait until the trails are groomed and open before using them. . . .
