25 Years Ago

February 15, 1995

On February 4, the Preliminary Piano Contest sponsored by the Minnesota Music Teachers Association was held at the University of Morris. Winners from Eagle Valley were Jill Pontius, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Pontius of Eagle Bend; and Kelly Greene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Greene of Eagle Bend. They are the students of Margaret Johnson of Clarissa.

Mary Yates was one of three people to receive the Outstanding Scouter Award for 1994. This award is given by the Lone Eagle District (Clarissa, Eagle Bend, Browerville, Long Prairie, Randall, Little Falls, Bowlus, Burtrum, Grey Eagle, Pierz, Swanville, Royalton and Upsala) to people who have gone the extra mile. Mary was nominated by her peers.


50 Years Ago

February 12, 1970

Over 500 people from nearly 25 communities attended the open house from 2-5 p.m. last Sunday at Clarissa’s new retirement home. “The response far exceeded all of our expectations and we deeply appreciate the interest that was shown,” said Mrs. Wm. Schultz, secretary. She also extended her thanks and appreciation in behalf of the officers and board of directors of the Clarissa Manor to everyone who helped stage the event.

The Clarissa Creamery manufacturing plant won first place last week for its high quality butter at the annual convention of the Central Minnesota Dairymen and Creamery Operators Association in St. Cloud. It was judged on flavor, bacteria count, composition and texture, among other things. The creamery’s high score was 99.67. At the same time, Melvin Hedlund, local creamery general manager and operator, was reelected president for a second term.
