25 Years Ago March 29, 1995 Bertha and Parkers Prairie firemen fought the flames and smoke of a house fire for nearly an hour Friday morning, uncertain of whether anyone was trapped inside the two-story wooden structure. They were eventually notified by a neighbor that the family had left for Arkansas the day before. The home, located 10 miles southwest of Bertha in Section 22 of Woodside Township, was destroyed. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The State Fire Marshal’s Office determined the origin to be in the basement, probably the furnace, according to Bertha Fire Chief Bruce Sellnow. The house was owned by Jerry Eaton and Sheila McCulley. ********** The Bertha-Hewitt Business Professionals of America chapter participated in the state contest recently with one student qualifying for the finals in three events. Kathy Dolezal led the B-H chapter, placing fifth in computerized accounting, sixth as financial specialist, and her small business management team placed. Other members of the team are Jaime Templin, Becky Ward and Aaron Smith. Caroline Kirscht was a finalist in spreadsheet application.
75 Years Ago March 29, 1945 Pfc. Donald W. Robben has been promoted to Corporal, Lieutenant Col. John C. Turner, Commanding Officer of the AAF Chemical Training Center has announced. ********** The grand finale to a most successful Red Cross Drive was written this week with the announcement by Chairman A.J. Hilpert that the village and township of Bertha had raised $1275, which represents 150 percent of a quota set at $850. This is undoubtedly one of the most successful Red Cross drives ever conducted in the village and township.
