Looking Back



Newcomer Mary Ward led the Bertha-Hewitt School Board election as she carried 95 votes to the 88 of incumbent Doug Ostlund and 80 of incumbent Dave Neil. Fewer than 12 percent of the school district’s registered voters (148 of 1258) went to the polls.

The Lutheran Brotherhood #8390 of Wadena-North Todd were able to help the city of Bertha with “Friends in Deed” project funds of $400 to help build the arbors leading to the water fountain in the city park. Pictured at the arbors are: Elverna Gossell, Bea Brasel, Susan Harms, Sandy Foreman and Lorraine Sellnow. All the women are members of the Lutheran Brotherhood. Gossell is a member of the Bertha City Council.


75 Years Ago

May 24, 1945

A memorial service for Pfc. Don Bergeson was held Sunday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Wadena under the auspices of the American Legion. Pfc. Bergeson lost his life at Iwo Jima March 10, 1945. Mrs. Bergeson, formerly Alice Beilke, was presented with a flag from the Commander Ivan McGary.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Grams received a letter last week from their son, Wilmer, who for the past nineteen months has been a prisoner of war in Germany. He was released early this month when American forces captured the territory where Stalag VIIA was located in which Wilmer had been incarcerated.
