25 Years Ago

March 1, 1995

The Raiders advanced eight wrestlers to the section tournament and two wrestlers came away with championships. Jeff Pokorney won the 130 pound championship. Jeff will now wrestle Travis Nagle (Frazee) in the State Tournament on Thursday. Jeff’s season record is now 28-10. Chad Rach also advanced to the State Tournament with a first place finish at 135. Chad will wrestle David Strack (Scott County West). If Chad wins, he could wrestle Justin Richter (Perham) in the quarterfinals.

At their February 21 meeting, the Bertha-Hewitt School Board approved the sixth grade trip to the Long Lake Conservation Camp near McGregor. Sixth graders Holly Bertram, Jaci Rach and Andrea Davenport; Instructor Cathy Riewer and Elementary Administrator Betty Kempe were present to explain the group’s progress. The students held a raffle and raised over $1000 toward the cost of the camp.


75 Years Ago

March 1, 1945

The Bertha Hatchery started setting eggs for the 1945 hatch last week, and manager L. H. Bottemiller is of the opinion the output from the local institution will equal that of any recent year. The Bertha Hatchery has also received 1000 hatched eggs from Hanson’s Pedigree Leghorn Farm of Corvallis, Oregon.

George B. Naylor, who lives near Hewitt, is featured in a story in the March issue of Capper’s Farm entitled “Fat Up 100 Pounds A Cow,” which describes his success in stepping up butter fat production. Naylor has learned that milking three times a day will make a 400 pound herd, average 500 pounds.
