News from Eagle Bend's Past

July 5, 1995

The Little Chapel of the Flowers, located at the Chapel Gardens southeast of Eagle Bend, soon will be 20 years old. To commemorate the anniversary and to show their appreciation to the people who have helped and supported them over the years, Alfred and Eva Schroeder are hosting an open house on July 12 and 13. The Schroeders got into the flower business in an unusual way. Eva had been writing flower advice columns for a number of years for a variety of publications. They also had a small greenhouse used for growing vegetable and flower plants. At that time, when a grave was dug in a cemetery it was up to the family to sod and cover it. They’d ask Alfred if he could find sod for them. He did. From the front lawn of their farm home!

In a business transaction completed last week, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Dettinger sold their bakery business, equipment and inventory to Mr. and Mrs. Del Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri. The Dettingers started Carl’s Bakery nine years ago in the Sumey building after the town had been without such a business for a number of years.
