Travel advisories were issued and schools were closed Monday morning, January 7, as central Minnesota woke up to a coating of ice on everything.

A winter weather advisory was issued on Sunday that extended through 9 a.m. Monday morning which warned of a mix of freezing rain.

The icy roads were hazardous and caused a semi to go off the road near Hewitt at approximately 2:24 a.m. The Minnesota State Patrol responded to the semi rollover.

The semi was traveling along Highway 71 near Hewitt when it ran off the icy roadway into the ditch. The driver, Victor Plante, 60, of Maynard, exited the semi. Shortly after, the load of turkeys shifted and the semi tipped over. Plante did not sustain any injuries.

With the temperature forecasted to reach 37 degrees, the ice melted and turned slushy on the roadways.
