The Independent News Herald was given a statement from Sheriff Don Asmus in regards to the $1.8 million settlement from Todd County to the Brett Huber Jr. family for his death in the jail. The story was printed in our December 12 edition.

“Todd County and the Minnesota Counties Intergovernmental Trust have agreed to pay the $1.8 million to Brett Huber’s estate in exchange for the dismissal of this lawsuit. There was no admission of wrongdoing and no non-monetary terms were included. However, in an effort to prevent a tragedy like this from occurring again, we will be reviewing and updating our jail policies and procedures.  Our jail staff will be attending additional training.”

Asmus or those mentioned in the suit cannot discuss the matter due to a non-disclosure agreement.
