A Matter of Perspective

Surprise!

That’s what I thought when I looked at the calendar today and realized that it was January 3 already and I had made no New Year’s Resolutions!

If you read the word “Surprise” in a sarcastic tone, you are much closer to the truth, especially if you know me at all!

I don’t really make resolutions. Not since the incident...

Just kidding. There was no incident.

Or was there?

Anyway, for those of you who do know me or have read my columns in the past, you may remember that I have said many times that I don’t make resolutions. Part of the reason is because I forget to do it. I mean, I didn’t even think about resolutions until January 3!

The other part of why I don’t make resolutions is because then I feel—at least partially—obligated to make an attempt at keeping them. Then, if I fail, I feel badly. I don’t like to feel like a failure, so I don’t make resolutions.

This is actually a very poor excuse for not making resolutions, though. I mean, if I don’t make a resolution or a goal, then what do I have to aim for? Nothing.

I like “nothing” even less than I like failing.

So, I made a goal—not a resolution—that I would define my goals this year in a specifically purchased book from the Late Jim Rohn program. (Rather than going into a whole article on who Rohn is, I will just tell you to Google his name and you will find out plenty!)

The book was cheap enough and it came with a free journal so how could I possibly lose?

The book is broken down into yearly, monthly, weekly, daily and I think even hourly ways to meet the goals which a person sets.

There are inspirational Rohn quotes scattered throughout the book, too.

You begin your journey by listing some of the things that you have done in your life that you are proud of—this is the first step in your goal setting.

There are some other steps, too, but I haven’t gotten that far yet—I mean, I just started thinking about this today!

I thought maybe I would spend some time this coming weekend working on this. I don’t want to be daunted by the task. One of my goals is to become more undaunted.

According to dictionary.com the word “undaunted” is an adjective with two general meanings: 1 undismayed; not discouraged; not forced to abandon purpose or effort; 2 undiminished in courage or valor; not giving way to fear; intrepid.

Hmmmm.... I feel that I really do want to meet that goal. I do not want to be discouraged or forced to abandon my purpose or effort.

So, this weekend, with an undaunted spirit I will begin the process of setting some goals—or in the vernacular—making some New Year’s Resolutions!

Wish me luck—I’m going to need it!
