A Matter of Perspective

Getting out of our own way

Do you ever have the feeling like you are stuck and just can’t move?

Great! This means you are human!

We share a commonality in that at times, we all feel a little stuck.

Having long experienced being stuck, I found that the best way to get unstuck is to simply get out of my own way!

What does that mean?

When we get into our own way, to me, it means that we have strongly connected ourselves to the outcome of whatever it is we are doing. When we do that, we are asking for trouble.

What do I mean?

Well, I am glad you asked!

Connecting ourselves to the outcome means that we put an awful lot of unnecessary pressure on ourselves. We are so fixated on the outcome that we forget why we are doing a thing in the first place.

If we are truly invested in a project and are doing it to help others, then it makes sense to detach ourselves from the outcome because it will take care of itself.

Easier said than done, I know.

I am often in my own way. I overthink, overreact, overwhelm, and sometimes overestimate.

Truly, the answer comes when we overcome and get out of our own way!

How do we get out of our own way?

Again, I am glad you asked.

Well, according to wikiHow there are five ways to do this.

1. Confront the inner dialogue that holds you back.

2. Counter negative inner dialogue with positive self-talk.

3. Determine the source of your fears about failure or success.

4. Acknowledge your feelings without letting them control you.

5. Stop comparing yourself to others.

I know that these are not always simple things to do, but they certainly are a good place to start.

This is one of the sticky notes that I have on my desk. I look at it every day!

Remember that in the end, it is our own negative thoughts and feelings that often sabotage us.

Get out of your way and get on with your day!
