January 11, 1995

Navy Seaman Recruit Andrew T. Drayna, son of Marvin W. Drayna of rural Browerville, recently completed United States Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois. Drayna is a 1994 graduate of Browerville High School.

The Clarissa council received the following police report for December, three vandalisms, one accident, one domestic, one fight, five assist motorists, two arrests, one dog complaint, nine citations, five warnings, eight assist other departments, eight miscellaneous complaints. Jerry Sovich reported on a plugged sewer and received the okay to buy a new wrench and compressor. The council approved advertising for a liquor store manager.

50 Years Ago

January 8, 1970

Fire calls made by the Clarissa Fire Department were nearly cut in half over the previous year during 1969, according to the department’s secretary, James Anderson, and could be a record low for fires in the Clarissa area. Of the 19 runs made by the department, one was a scheduled grass burning last spring along Eagle Creek where it runs through the village, one was a false alarm, one was a flood call and another call was to a car accident. ā€œWith two of our calls being made to the Eagle Bend area in 1969, it could possibly be a record low for fires in this community,ā€ Anderson said.

Wayne Burns, local businessman, was appointed councilman to fill the position formerly held by David Hansen at the regular meeting of the village council. Hansen, who was reelected last November for a three year term, although he did not file, declined to accept the office for another term. Thus, the council appointed Burns for the term to which Hansen had been elected on the write-in vote.
