The Clarissa Independent 25 Years Ago April 26, 1995 The Clarissa Senior Center hosted the 1995 Minnesota Senior Spelling Bee on April 19. Six contestants: Maxine Carlisle, Cecelia Perish, Audrey Zimmer, George Mayerchak, Rev. Gerold Goetz and the 1994 Todd County Spelling Bee Champion Marian Buchholz spelled a total of 119 words before contestants were narrowed down to two finalists: Rev. Goetz and Zimmer. Goetz misspelled “melancholy” and Zimmer spelled it correctly and the next word “cologne” to win the 1995 Todd County Senior Spelling Bee Championship. ********** The Clarissa Junior Girl Scouts and third grade Brownies had a spectacular slumber party Saturday overnight at the Clarissa City Hall. They had a super great time cooking a complete supper and serving it family style. Working on badges was the main event for the overnighters. Those at the slumber party were: Tami Smith, Marie Vetsch, LeAnn Dehn, Melissa Vetsch, Emily Hudalla, Alyssa Wagner, Janna Heirl, Erin Woge, Janelle Sovich, Sara Bailey, Chris Lundstrom, Jessica Schwantz, Rebecca Birk, Amber Freeman, Becky Vetsch, Terri Bailey, Sharon Schwantz, Kathy Birk, Bev Johnson and Jessica Johnson.

50 Years Ago April 19, 1970 Scout awards were presented by Scoutmaster Jerry Schnettler and Assistant Scoutmaster Ellis McKindley, while Robert Cuchna, merit badge counselor of Troop 37, presented the merit badges. Tenderfoot badges were awarded to Steve Woge, Mark Sobotka, Kevin Kamarud, Lynn Pesta, Charles Johnson, Brad Martin, Mike Schnettler, Jeff Hauer, Ron Bowen, Chuck Karjala, Randy Burns, Bob Anderson, Paul Skillings, Tim Peterson, Dan Dixon and Randy Stoecker. ********** The Clarissa Meat Market, local meat butchering and processing plant, was the first in Todd County to comply with state regulations and get the state meat inspection service as required by a 1969 Minnesota Law. The local meat market and processing plant is one of the largest in Todd County and Mr. Bican employs from 14 to 21 people.
