Bertha-Hewitt High School sophomore Jill Samuelson won third place in the Otter Tail County Historical Society’s creative writing competition recently. The contest, which celebrates March as Women’s History Month, prompted Jill to write about her grandmother, Betty Samuelson, in Tim Hjelmeland’s composition class. Judging criteria stressed the value of students looking at how their subject’s lives related to the historical period in which they lived and their contributions to the community.

Bertha High School’s basketball team was eliminated in the Region Six championship playoff last Thursday evening at Staples by a powerful Crosby-Ironton team, picked by many as the second best team in the state. The score was 41 to 24 and might have been considerably closer had the locals been hitting their shots from the field and from the free throw line. To show how badly off form they were they connected on only ten percent of their tries, while in the district final they made good on 54 percent of their attempts.
