On Friday, June 9 at the State Track and Field Meet, Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale (BHV) was represented in the long jump, 100m dash and 200m dash by Charlene Butler. Erica Dague represented BHV in the 400m dash. Butler made it into the finals of the long jump. In the prelims she jumped 18’ 2 1/2” and broke a ten-year-old Class A state record. During the finals she placed second as Gina Perish beat her mark by 3 1/4”. Butler held the new state record for approximately 45 minutes. Dague ran a personal best and a Bertha-Hewitt School record and finished fifth in the prelims. She was edged out of the finals by .03 hundredths of a second.

Wegleitner Trucking and Northern Milk Products recently purchased a new banner for the Bertha-Hewitt Marching Band. Lt. Elmer Grams, a prisoner of war in Germany for nineteen months, returned home Sunday evening for a well earned sixty-day leave with his parents and other relatives and friends at Minneapolis and New Ulm. Lt. Grams was shot down over Pisa, Italy while on a bombing mission to Vienna, Austria.

The Bertha Commercial Club will hold its regular monthly meeting at the Congregational Church with the usual banquet preceding the business meeting. Mr. R.D. Wickum of the Minnesota Power and Light Company will be accompanied by a lighting engineer from the Westinghouse Company who will be prepared to answer all questions pertaining to lighting problems and will make suggestions concerning post-war street lighting plans for the village.
