Karmen Lemm and her friends thought there was no better way to cool off in the heat than take a dip in the Wing River under the bridge by the intersection on Highway 71. Karmen, 10, was grabbed by the current. Her friend, Jeremy Camacho, 9, tried to pull her out, but the current was too strong. Karmen’s foot became lodged in a hole under the water and became stuck. Her friend, Toni Mead, 10, went for help. Dave Moats, 14, and his father, David, ran down to the river. Dave jumped in and released Karmen’s foot and pulled her out. Two days later, Karmen went to visit her new friend, Dave and handed him a thank you note. She signed the note, “Your friend forever, Karmen.”

Our hats are off to Coach Anderson and his Bertha footballers. They started the season in grand style. They set a precedent and stopped one of the state’s best winning streaks when they met and defeated the Browerville High School team on the local field. This is the first time Bertha has defeated Browerville in six-man football and it was Browerville’s first loss in two seasons. The final score with Bertha winning was 31-6.
