The Ongoing Saga of a Girl and Her Scale

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the COVID-15 in my regular column A Matter of Perspective.

In case you didn’t read it, the COVID-15 refers to the average of 15 pounds of weight that many people gained during the first couple of months of COVID-19.

Anyway, I reported that I had gained about 14 pounds.

I am happy to report that I have now lost 13 pounds of it.

What I am not so happy to report is how I lost the 13 pounds.

As of Tuesday, June 9 through today which is Monday, June 15, I have lost the 13 pounds. I wasn’t really even trying to. Yes, I have gone walking a few times (deliberately!) and rode my bike with my granddaughter one day, but other than that, I have not done a lot of physical activity.

Why? Because I haven’t felt good.

I’m pretty sure it’s not COVID-19 because I have no fever or any of the other tell-tale signs.

What I have been experiencing is horrible heartburn since Wednesday, June 10.

The heartburn has been nearly constant making it hard to eat or sleep or work or do anything. I do have moments of relief, usually right after I eat some antacids (instead of food).

Yes, I know I should go to the doctor. Unfortunately, without insurance that is a current impossibility.

I have made great efforts to improve my eating: bland foods, vegetables and little meat, but it doesn’t help a lot—at least not yet.

I have had heartburn before, but not on a daily basis and it usually subsides within 24 hours.

Am I worried about bigger heart problems? Yes.

Am I worried about gut problems? You betcha.

I think drinking coffee may have something to do with it, too. But can I give it up? Hmmmm....I don’t think so.

I’m going to give myself until Wednesday, June 17 before I make any further decisions unless it gets worse.

In the meantime, bland foods it is! And antacids in moderation!
