Verndale School Board: Audit, levy, plan to fix up auditorium

by Trinity Gruenberg

The Verndale School Board held their regular meeting on December 2.

The audit was presented by Brian Koehn. He gave a clean opinion. Total revenues were $7.7 million in fiscal year 2019, up from $7.1 last year. State sources increased and they have more funding per pupil. Expenditures varied one percent from 2018.

“Your pupil units are trending in an upward direction. Not all that common today,” said Koehn.

The more students open enroll, the more the district is able to grow their fund balance.

There were four findings in the audit, three are related to size: lack of segregation of duties due to small office staff, year-end closing procedures, also due to size and part-time business manager. The auditor prepares the final financial report. The fourth finding is of related party transactions, getting affidavits from the contractors to the school for bids and quotes.

The board approved the audit.
