The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic disturbance call at 5:15 a.m. in the city of Miltona on Tuesday, February 26. Douglas County Sheriff Troy Wolbersen said two Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies responded and at one point a deputy discharged his firearm.

When deputies announced their arrival, a man now identified as Tyler Schmidtbauer, 27, came to the door holding a shotgun. Schmidtbauer ignored deputies’ orders to drop the shotgun. At one point, Alexander Herzberg fired his weapon, striking Schmidtbauer. Schmidtbauer was pronounced deceased at the scene and died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. No one else was injured during the incident.

Crime scene personnel recovered a shotgun near Schmidtbauer’s body. Some of the incident was captured on a body camera.  Deputy Herzberg is on standard administrative leave.
