Pursuit of Stolen Vehicle Ends in Staples

According to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, on Tuesday evening, April 18, a high speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle ensued through Otter Tail and Todd Counties.
A 1996 green Chevy pickup was stolen in Miltona on Monday, April 17.
The girlfriend of the truck’s owner spotted the truck in Parkers Prairie and called local law enforcement. An Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Deputy located the vehicle on Highway 29 near the Highway 210 intersection. The deputy was spotted and the suspect took off at a high rate of speed down Highway 210.
The pursuit went through Hewitt and ended in Staples. The Staples Police Department deployed spike strips and the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office performed a pit maneuver, both of which failed.
Law enforcement called off the pursuit in Staples due to public safety.
A Staples resident spotted the truck with the driver fleeing in a wooded area inside the city. The suspect Tyler Scott Schmidtbauer, 25, of Miltona was apprehended by law enforcement and taken to the Otter Tail County where he is being held on felony fleeing a peace officer, felony possession of stolen property and driving after revocation.
Assisting agencies included the New York Mills Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Wadena County Sheriff’s Office, Todd County Sheriff’s Office, Staples Police Department and the Eagle Bend Police Department.
The pursuit lasted for 30 minutes and spanned 20 miles, reaching speeds up to 95 miles per hour.
According to court records, he was convicted of a felony fleeing a peace officer, third degree DWI and an petty misdemeanor for speeding in 2013 in Wadena County.
