Verndale School Board
The Verndale School Board held their regular meeting on January 8.
Organizational Meeting
They held an organizational meeting prior to the regular meeting. Marcus Edin was elected chairperson, Bill Blaha was elected vice chairperson, Tony Stanley was elected clerk and Scott Veronen was elected treasurer. Meeting days and times remain the same. They appointed members to committees. Compensation remains at $80 per regular board meeting, $10 additional for board chair, $60 per extra meeting and committee meetings.
Teacher shortage
Superintendent Paul Brownlow shared the legislative agenda for the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) that discussed the teacher shortage.
The 2017 Omnibus Education bill created a new agency, the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB). It consolidated the duties and responsibilities of the Board of Teaching and the Minnesota Department of Education’s Educator Licensing Division. PELSB will oversee teacher licensing and redesigned teacher licensure in 2018.
They are implementing a four tiered teaching license over the next few years.
Tier one—Individuals and school districts or charter schools may apply for a Tier One license. The license is for one year and specific to the district or charter school and specific content areas. Schools may request up to three renewals, and more if a ‘good cause’ is proven or if in a ‘shortage area.’
Tier Two—follows the same conditions as Tier One with the exception this is a two year license that can be renewed three or more times based on PELSB rules...
