Students present "We Honor You" to Veterans

On Thursday, November 9, the students of the Bertha-Hewitt School presented a special program in honor of Veteran’s Day.

Members of the Bertha American Legion William Larson Post 366 presented the colors and arms.  The B-H Band presented the songs: Star Spangled Banner and Armed Forces on Parade. The various school choirs sang: America the Beautiful, Because of You and We Honor You.

Legion Chaplin Marvin Runyan asked for a moment of silence to remember the fallen veterans as the program began. There were several student speakers who gave brief speeches to advance the program to its climax when third grade students honored the veterans in attendance with special papers they had created and handed out to those in attendance.

Veterans Bill Kern and Butch Rice talked about what it meant to them to be veterans. Rice called for each member of the audience to become “veterans” by making life better by helping out even one person in their community. Kern shared the memory he had of serving in Germany when President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed. He said the German soldiers draped a black cloth over the late president’s photo as a sign of respect which touched the American soldiers serving there.

Students looked at the banners which welcomed the community and Veterans to their program. Each elementary class created a banner which was hung in the foyer of the 2000 gymnasium.

Lunch was served by the students after the program.
