A legacy built on books: Oelrich’s love of reading and children lives on at Eagle Bend Library

Mary Oelrich was the kind of woman who could whisk you away to another world without ever leaving the room. All it took was a book, a cozy corner, and Mary’s contagious love for reading.

As much as she loved the written word, Mary loved children just as much—even more. She spent years sharing both of those passions as the librarian at Eagle Valley School, where she helped generations of students discover the joy of books.

“She was everybody’s second mom or second grandma,” recalled Rick Hest, a former teacher at the school. “She loved everybody.”

That love showed up in big ways and small. Whether it was helping a child find just the right book or baking a birthday cake for a fellow teacher, Mary poured her heart into her work and her community.

“She loved very much,” said her daughter, Sharon Notch of Eagle Bend....
