After retiring from a 35-year military career, Paula Christensen has turned a retirement joke into a new business venture with the opening of Cup a…, a coffee shop located in Browerville.

Christensen said the idea began when her husband asked what she planned to do after retirement.

“I joked that I would open a coffee shop,” she said. “Then the property became available, and we decided to do it.”

A Swanville area native, Christensen spent her military career at Camp Ripley serving in several departments including food service, maintenance warehouse, supply and unit level administration positions.

She said building the business from the ground up was both challenging and rewarding.

Christensen said opening the business has been a major personal accomplishment.

The shop offers coffee, iced coffee, smoothies, refreshers, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, pastries and ice cream in what Christensen describes as a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

WiFi is available, and she hopes the business becomes a place where people gather and connect. They enjoy when several groups of wonderful ladies stop in for lunch...
