News from Verndale's Past

40 Years Ago, October 16, 1985

• A large percentage of hands were raised in response to the question from Fire Chief Duane Davis who asked how many had fire alarms in their homes. He also emphasized the importance of practicing EDITH (Exit Drills in the Home) and urged children to ask their parents to participate. He spoke to elementary students on Thursday following the practice fire drill in the school after which they trooped down to the fire hall. Firemen Earl Flores, Bill and Dan Fisher and Bob Anderson gave a demonstration on what firemen do when arriving at the scene of a fire.

• Winners of junior events of the Central Minnesota Horse Improvement Association were: Tanya Rosenfeldt of Felton (second in Junior Western Pleasure, Western Riding and Junior Key Race); Chris Nelson of Detroit Lakes (first in Junior Showmanship, Western Riding and second in Junior Horsemanship), Connie Nanik of Verndale (first in mares, and second in Junior Showmanship); and Darren Simpson of Osakis (first in Junior Horsemanship an Junior Western Pleasure).

• The Verndale Pirates finished their regular season with a 29-9 victory over the Hill City Hornets last Friday on the home gridiron. The win made the Pirates 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the conference making them champions of the Heartland Six Conference. This is the first year for the Pirates in this conference of nine-man teams.

• Pictured, David and Loren Horsager listened as their Taiwanese guest, Johnson C. H. Lee, told them about the banner he was holding depicting the 4-H emblem and both the Taiwan and American flags. David is holding a fan which Johnson brought as a gift to the family while Loren holds a decorative table mat, also a gift. Mr. Lee is visiting the Horsager family as part of his American tour of farms to study agriculture in this country.

15 Years Ago, October 14, 2010

• A self defense class was held at the Verndale High School on October 6. Cheerleaders and volleyball players in grades 7-12 were invited by Tara Erkenbrack, the Verndale cheerleading coach, to participate in a self defense training session with Deputy Luke Manderscheid, the defensive tactics instructor for Wadena County. Deputy Cory Carr of the Verndale Police Department also assisted in demonstrating self defense tactics.

• On Thursday, October 5, Verndale hosted their conference rivals New York Mills and was able to walk away with a 3-1 victory over the Eagles. Individual game scores were: 25-4; 24-26; 25-15 and 28-26. Stats, kills: Moenkedick 5, M. Richter 4; A. Richter 4; Johnson 2; K. Richter 1; Schluttner 1.

• The photo depicts Grandparent’s Day in the elementary. Aubrey Hess and grandparents Deb and Loran Hackler celebrated Grandparent’s Day on September 24. Grandparents were welcome to see their kindergarten age grandchildren’s classrooms and activities and have lunch with them. Jaden Schwanke showed Cheryl Christensen how to build a puzzle.
