News from Verndale's Past

40 Years Ago, May 14, 1986

• New FFA chapter officers for the 1986-87 year are: Mike Willis, president; Loren Horsager, vice president; Peter Schmitz, treasurer; Ken Moyer, sentinel; Bridget Perish, secretary; and Brenda Line, reporter. Alternates named were Mary Tiede, Synette Plautz, and Damon Butler. A movie entitled “Be All You Can Dream” was shown during the program. Advisor Russ Schauer commended the students for their performance.

• Honored on National School Cooks Day last Friday were the school food preparers standing in front of a bank of cards they received from their admirers, those they feed every school day. They are: Pat Schmitz, Edna Perius, Supervisor Jane Adams and Avis Paulson.

• High school winners in the PTA/PTSA Cultural Arts competition were: Angie Boyd, who entered a musical number, and Wendy Heller and Tiffany Anderson with their visual art entries. Angie’s entry won first place in State competition and is on its way to Chicago for national judging. Tiffany Anderson’s entry took second place in state competition, while the pencil drawing of Wendy’s and all others received honorable mention and were recognized with a certificate. Angie was asked to play her musical entry during the luncheon for state winners held on April 18 in Duluth.

• Bryan Jacobson of Verndale was selected as the Most Valuable Player at the Pelican Rapids track meet held Friday, May 2. Bryan finished in first place in the 100 meter dash at 11.2, first in the 200 meter dash at 23.1 and was part of the team that finished in first place in the 1600 meter relay, which completed the run in 3:36. Other team members were Sean Buckreis, Chris Schill and Rick James.

• On Saturday, April 30, several groups showed up to help re-plant trees in areas that were hit hard from last year’s devastating tornado. Pictured, Randy Jahnke and Vince Hinojos filled in the dirt around the tree that was being held in place by Tom DeFrance as they helped re-plant trees that were destroyed in the path of the tornado.

• Since the Twin Towers fell under the terrorist led attacks on September 11, 2001, Al Quida leader Osama bin Laden has been a major target of the United States’ War on Terror. On Sunday, May 1, the target was killed through a shot in the head by U.S. forces in a mansion outside of the Pakistan capitol of Islamabad in the city of Abbottabad.

• Game one at Sebeka started out looking good for the Raiders baseball team as Dustin Motschenbacher was safe on an error to start the game and Nick Jasmer threw a walk. Jared Hoemberg quickly followed with a three-run home run before most fans had even settled into their seats.

• The Augsburg College men’s basketball team held their annual awards night. Tyler Schmidt, son of Brad and Shari Schmidt of LeSueur and grandson of Donna Denny of Verndale, is a member of the team. Schmidt received a plaque for “Most Improved” and led the MIAC in the three-point shooting percentage, knocking down 26 of 47 attempts in conference play (55%) while setting the Augsburg single season three-point percentage record.
