40 Years Ago, July 23, 1986
• Minnesota became the 20th state in the nation to pass a mandatory seat belt use law earlier this year. The legislation takes effect Friday, August 1. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Minnesota Occupant Restraint Program and the Seatbelt Coalition are continuing educational campaigns pursuant to the law taking effect. At least four seat belt surveys will measure the public’ response.
• Dale and Avis Paulsen returned home recently from a two-week visit with their son, Mike, and family in Germany. Dale and Mike posed for a picture in front of the one of four Hotel General McNair structures, the one where they stayed while visiting there.
• Miss Verndale and her parents and sister were picked up on the city’s float last Friday evening and taken on a tour of the town, leading a noisy caravan which culminated with a greeting in McNair Park by well-wishers. Lynn left the next morning to participate in week-long activities at the Minneapolis Aquatennial. A day-time parade was held Saturday morning and a larger torchlight parade held Wednesday night. Lynn will be among over 40 contestants vying for the Queen of the Lakes title.
• Kimberly Falk, speech/Spanish teacher, tendered her resignation as Verndale’s speech teacher at the July 14 regular meeting of the school bard. She said she didn’t feel she was being paid enough for the time involved so she would have to give up the position. She added, however, that she would reconsider if compensated.

• On Wednesday, July 20, Governor Mark Dayton signed into law the budget bills and bonding bills passed by the Minnesota Legislature early that morning during a special session. He signed nine budget bills and three other spending bills. This came after a special session on Tuesday, July 19, where lawmakers met for almost 13 hours in an effort to come to an agreement that would end the shutdown. The shutdown was the longest in the past decade, lasting 20 days.
• The Raiders Legion baseball team, sponsored by the Bertha Legion Club, completed their season last week with a respectable showing in the District 6 tournament. The Raiders saw their season come to a close with a tough 4-2 loss to Holdingford and a 7-4 defeat to Long Prairie. They end the season with a 20-4 record.
• The opening act at the Culpepper and Meriwether Circus that was held on Monday, July 18, involved two tigers and a lion. The Circus was held at the Wadena Fairgrounds. A young lady performed acrobatics on a single vertical rope that was hanging from the ceiling. A family riding unicycles performed many stunning tricks.
• The Wadena County Fair opens this week and runs from July 27-31, coordinated by the Wadena County Ag Society. The fair is being held at the Wadena Fairgrounds. There will be carnival rides, music, 4-H displays, vendors and fireworks. There will also be concession stands. New events for Saturday will be the horse show, a pet parade, the heartland two-cylinder club, the classic car and motor show, the kiddie pedal pull, a dunk tank and an apple pie baking contest.
