News from Verndale's Past
40 Years Ago, September 3, 1986
• Mayor Dale Carr said because he feels that 12 years of service on the council and serving as mayor is enough, he will not seek re-election in the November elections, as the filling dates opened Tuesday of this week. Carr feels it’s time for someone else to serve in that capacity. Also indicating they do not plan to file for re-election are Fred Miller, the oldest member of the council, and Roger Anderson, who has completed several years in that position. Miller said he will absolutely not run again.
• The new computer/math teacher at Verndale High school this year is Dale L. Davies of Aitkin. Davies graduated from Brainerd Community College in 1980, then from Bemidji State University where he also acquired a coaching certificate in addition to his math major. Margaret L. Blauert of Sebeka will serve as Verndale’s secondary Chapter 1 math and reading instructor and will be teaching the new reading classes for junior high.
• Three Verndale students have been listed among more than 260 entering freshmen recognized by the Entrance with Honors program at North Dakota State University. Students receiving this honor have been ranked among the top 10 percent of their high school classes or have had a composite score of 25 or more on the ACT or an equivalent score on a similar entrance examination.
• Verndale Varsity Football Cheerleaders spent Saturday, August 23, at Moorhead State University competing with 25 other upper Midwest schools in the 6th annual MSU Clinic which is hosted by the MSU cheerleaders. Taking a brief break to pose during the season’s first home game on Friday against Rothsay were: Rhonda Colby, Jennifer Ninneman, Kim Trosen, Sarah Schanz, Tammy Hahn and Dana Davidson.

•It was back to school on Tuesday, September 6. The Verndale School staff found themselves extremely busy as the office became a hub of activity as incoming students needed information and answers to their questions. Students took time to greet each other and catch up on the summer’s activities.
• The 18th Annual Lakewood Health System Foundation Golf Classic was held on August 26 at the Vintage at Staples with a total of $19,600 raised for the Capital Campaign, with the proceeds going to revitalize the Lakewood Heath System Care Center. “The Misfits” handed in the winning scorecard for the 18-hole scramble. The teammates included: Wally Abel, Jon Willgohs, Mike Moriak, Julie Moriak and Mary Fitcher.
• Verndale volleyball suffered a 0-3 loss on Tuesday in their home opener to Parkers Prairie with individual game scores of 15-25, 17-25 and 17-25. Teresa Moenkedick led the way with 9 kills and 23 digs.
• According to a report from the sheriff’s office, the Wadena County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a burglary and stolen vehicle case. Deputies were called to People’s Express on Highway 10 on Friday morning. Employees of the business discovered the breaking-in shortly after 7 a.m. Entry was made by breaking a window in the back of the building. Once inside, the suspects took items including several hand tools, a welder, cell phones, a television and a digital camera.
