• Karen Greenwaldt, Beth Colby and daughter Rhonda looked at the schedule of classes on the door of the high school history room during the open house held prior to the homecoming coronation last week Monday. Most visitors were interested in examining the areas damaged by the fire this past summer when the school was struck by lightning.
• A number of lightning strikes in the area were reported during a severe electrical storm in the area about 6 p.m. on Sunday. Lightning was reported to have knocked out the electrical controls at a bulk milk tank at the Ernie Grewe farm about 2.5 miles south of town. The milk obtained that evening and the next morning had to be fed back to the animals because of lack of a cooling system. It was a loss of about 400 pounds of milk.

• It’s a long way from New York City to Verndale. It’s 1120 miles to be close to exact. For Andrew Green, who was born and raised in Queens, New York, the journey was perhaps longer than the miles between the two cities. Green served as a New York City police officer and detective for 16 years. Green was one of the many men and women who helped during the 9-11 attacks on New York City 10 years ago. As a result of it, he was found to have kidney cancer nearly five years ago.
• Hats off to Verndale’s newly crowned homecoming queen and king, Jordanna Schluttner and Travis Lollar. Jordanna’s parents are Art and Michelle Schluttner and Travis’ parents are Lewis Lollar and Terri Arenkiel.
• Verndale Pirates celebrated homecoming this past week and capped the activities off with a home game against the Hillcrest Lutheran Academy Comets. The boys were looking to get back on the right track after dropping their last game to Underwood. Andy Bounds led the rushing attack for Verndale gaining 40 yards, while Dillon Card paced them through the air with 118.
• Homecoming week is always a unique time of year when students can wear something they wouldn’t dream of doing otherwise. Last week, the student body was encouraged to take part in tacky day, western day, crazy hair day, senior citizen and spirit day. Pictured, Abby Martinson and Ariana Sandberg went all out on crazy hair day with Abby wearing a heart on her head.
