News from Verndale's Past

• At the close of the filing period last week Tuesday, a total of four persons had filed for councilman posts while the two previously announced for mayor remained unchallenged. Lyle Schmitz was the first to file followed by Roger Crowe. On the last day, JoAnne Perish and William Carter both entered the race. Competing for mayor will be Gary Van Dam and Roger Anderson.
• What better way to enjoy a beautiful fall day than a horse drawn wagon ride. Young and old alike hopped onto a wagon driven by Les Bain of Verndale, giving free rides on Sunday in conjunction with a turkey barbecue dinner served at the England Prairie Club.
• The Pequot Lakes Indians rode into town on September 18 and did in the Pirates in a tough four game match. The Pirates played very good ball, but a number of key personnel, namely Kim Trosen and Tammy Hahn, weren’t up to par because of the flu bug and this greatly affected the outcome of the match.
• It took a while for the Pirates to get going in a non-conference game with Herman last Friday, but once they did there was no stopping them. A fumble recovery by Jacob Schmitz at Herman’s 17 yard line in the second quarter helped snap a scoreless tie in ninth ranked Verndale’s 43-8 victory. A three yard run by Don Campbell for the TD and later a pass from Campbell to Dean Fisher put Verndale on the scoreboard.

• If you’ve driven north of Verndale recently, you surely have noticed the enormous play structure that now stands near the Assembly of God’s parsonage. It didn’t happen overnight, but with the determination of the church’s leaders it now provides a place for children to gather without having to cross the busy highway and railroad tracks.
• When Louie and Betty Schively chose Verndale as the location for one of the many Tools and More stores they have established over the past few decades, they never dreamed it would have done as well as it has. They moved the store to town in 2001 after operating it out of their dairy barn since 1983. The building was in tough shape at the time of the move and now after ten years, they have decided its time for an upgrade. The existing 8000 square foot store that stand along Farwell Street next to the railroad tracks is in its final days. As soon as the new building is completed enough to have inventory moved in, the old store will be demolished.
• The Verndale City Council continues to field complaints associated with the city’s ongoing Sewer and Water Improvements Year 2 Project. Some of the complaints are about the paving work in the alleys where sewer lines have been replaced. Kevin Wernberg, the city’s engineer for the project, expressed disappointment about the paving mishaps during the Monday meeting. The complaints about paving the alleys follows problems earlier this year when local properties were flooded during a dewatering process by the project contractor.
•The Lady Pirates dropped an important conference game to New York Mills on Thursday evening as they went five games, but just couldn’t manage to pull off the win despite a great game from Moenkedick who came up with 26 kills and 31 digs. Glenz and Schluttner also had a great game at the net combining for 31 blocks.
